Students in the Syracuse 和 Binghamton group both rotate through inpatient, 门诊, neurosurgery during their clerkship. The clinical sites for the Syracuse campus include University Hospital, University Hospital Clinical Campus, Veteran’s Hospital. The Binghamton clinical sites include Neuro Medical Care Associates, Southern NY Neurosurgical Group, Comprehensive Stroke 和 Neuro-Endovascular Center, Binghamton General Hospital 和 UHS Wilson Medical Center.

The Neuroscience Clerkship is designed to expose students to a variety of inpatient, 门诊, surgical rotations in Neurology.

Rotation Details:

• Students should carry 2-4 patients at a time while on their inpatient rotations.
• Students will share call throughout the clerkship at an average of 1 call shift per week. Call schedules will be discussed in further detail at clerkship orientation.
• Lectures 和 conferences occur throughout the 5 week clerkship.

St和ardized Patient Experience

Students are exposed to st和ardized patient experiences (SPEs) twice during their clerkship, with progressing complexity. These SPEs follow a review of the neurological exam during orientation which is designed to re-familiarize students with the st和ard neurological exam taught during the first 和 second year of medical school. Details regarding the SPEs are as follows:

Students are required to complete four write ups during their clerkship to be graded by attending of their choice. One write up must be problem focused, two are formalized H 和 P’s. Problem focused write ups refer to notes directed toward particular problem but are usually not comprehensive. These are usually fulfilled with follow up encounters in 门诊 settings, 在医院里, 或咨询. Formalized H 和 P’s are best fulfilled with new patients, in any setting. The discussion section in these write ups should note gaps in the current literature or knowledge in the field, as well as evidence based approaches applicable to patient care. 写起 are a key part of the clerkship grade, as well as a method for formative feedback 和 evaluation.

评估

Clinical evaluations contribute to a significant component of the clerkship grade. Students’ clinical performance is evaluated by attendings 和 residents against the clerkship learning objectives. Additionally, students are required to complete evaluations of their preceptors. Information 和 feedback from all evaluations is reviewed by the clerkship coordinator, clerkship director 和 department chair in ongoing development efforts.
