Cardiac Anesthesia

The Division of Cardiac Anesthesia at Upstate University Hospital comprises three full time, fellowship trained Cardiac Anesthesiologists. Cardiac Anesthesia faculty provide care in the main operating rooms for all the cardiac surgical and major vascular patients. In addition, the faculty is busy providing services in the Electrophysiology lab and Endovascular operating suite and complicated non-cardiac surgical cases both in the operating rooms and in outside locations.

Our cardiac surgical cases have been steadily increasing in number over the last few years. With the establishment of ‘Upstate Heart Institute’ we are expecting the number of cases to significantly increase. Upstate is the only tertiary care center serving 17 counties in the upstate New York area. As a result, we perform surgeries that include off and on pump coronary artery bypass grafting, minimally invasive Mitral valve surgeries, Aortic and Tricuspid valve surgeries, aortic aneurysm and dissection repair surgeries, in our adult population. Our Transcatheter Aortic Valve replacement (TAVR) program is a and is continuing to grow. Left Atrial occlusion device implantation procedures are an additional surgical procedure that our faculty provides services for.

Residency Program

The Anesthesiology residency training program at Upstate is a robust and dynamic training program. Being the only academic medical center in the region, we are equipped with the latest in transesophageal echocardiogram (TEE) technology. Residents spend a minimum of two months rotating in cardiac anesthesia during their residency. In addition, they can choose to do electives in Echocardiography, perfusion or any area related to Cardiac anesthesia.

Patient Care

At Upstate, we also provide care for our pediatric cardiac surgical patients. Two of the faculty members work closely with the pediatric cardiac surgical team and the pediatric intensivists to ensure that a high level of care is provided to this unique patient population.
