Edward McArdle, JD

Edward McArdle, JD, is an Assistant Clinical Professor of Bioethics and Humanities. Prior to joining the Center in 2019, Mr. McArdle served as an Assistant Attorney General with the Office of the New York State Attorney General, where his work included representing SUNY Upstate University Hospital in matters involving patient capacity, treatment and non-treatment, and safe discharge issues. 

Mr. McArdle teaches discussion groups in Health Care Ethics, the bioethics class for health professions students, and in Patients to Populations: Ethics, Law and Public Health, the bioethics class for medical students at SUNY Upstate. He also teaches a law school government legal practice class and an academic class on the role of state attorneys general in the United States. His research interests include surrogate medical decision making at the end of life, disability rights, patient advocacy, and legal grounds to challenging health insurer denials of coverage based on medical necessity.

Mr. McArdle is also a member of the Onondaga County Bar Association, volunteers with the Volunteer Lawyers Project of Onondaga County, and is a past recipient of pro bono awards from the Onondaga County and New York State bar associations for his role in creating a free legal assistance clinic for patients and their families located at University Hospital.
